Part 107 practice questions: Operations

Operations is about 25 percent of the Part 107 test. Five questions on decision-making, fitness to fly, airport traffic and emergencies. Each question below is from VLOSready's bank: checked against its FAA source, reviewed a second time, and solved blind against the answer key.

  1. 1. Taking a risky low pass to impress the client is an example of the hazardous attitude:

    1. Macho
    2. Anti-authority
    3. Resignation
    Show the answer

    A. Macho

Macho is trying to prove you are better than others by taking risks. The antidote: taking chances is foolish.

  2. 2. The IMSAFE checklist is used to assess:

    1. The pilot's own fitness to fly
    2. The aircraft's condition before flight
    3. Whether the weather meets minimums
    Show the answer

    A. The pilot's own fitness to fly

IMSAFE is a personal fitness check: Illness, Medication, Stress, Alcohol, Fatigue, and Emotion (or Eating). It is how 107.17's medical-condition rule becomes a habit.

  3. 3. Runway 27 is aligned closest to a magnetic heading of:

    1. 270 degrees
    2. 27 degrees
    3. 207 degrees
    Show the answer

    A. 270 degrees

A runway number is the whole number nearest one-tenth of the magnetic azimuth of its centerline, measured clockwise from magnetic north; runway 27 therefore points roughly west.

  4. 4. A remote pilot sees a manned aircraft on final approach toward the field where the drone is airborne nearby. The pilot must:

    1. Yield the right of way and keep well clear
    2. Continue, since the drone is below 400 feet
    3. Climb above the aircraft's path
    Show the answer

    A. Yield the right of way and keep well clear

Section 107.37 requires the small unmanned aircraft to yield to all aircraft and never pass over, under or ahead of one unless well clear; 107.43 separately prohibits interfering with the airport's operations.

  5. 5. During a flyaway, the remote pilot climbs above 400 feet AGL to regain the control link. Under Part 107 this is:

    1. Permitted, as far as the emergency requires
    2. A violation, since 400 feet is a hard limit
    3. Permitted only in Class G airspace
    Show the answer

    A. Permitted, as far as the emergency requires

Section 107.21 lets the remote pilot in command deviate from any rule of Part 107 to the extent necessary to meet an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action; the FAA may ask for a written report.
