Part 107 practice questions: Regulations
Regulations is about 48 percent of the Part 107 test. Five questions on the operating limits, night lighting and staying current. Each question below is from VLOSready's bank: checked against its FAA source, reviewed a second time, and solved blind against the answer key.
1. Minimum flight visibility for a Part 107 operation, as observed from the control station, is:
- 3 statute miles
- 1 statute mile
- 5 statute miles
Show the answer
A. 3 statute miles
Section 107.51(c) requires minimum flight visibility of 3 statute miles from the location of the control station.

2. A small unmanned aircraft may exceed 400 feet AGL when it:
- Stays within 400 feet of a structure, horizontally and above its top
- Is inspecting a structure taller than 400 feet, at any distance from it
- Has ATC authorization for the airspace it is in
Show the answer
A. Stays within 400 feet of a structure, horizontally and above its top
Section 107.51(b) allows flight above 400 feet AGL only within a 400-foot radius of a structure and no higher than 400 feet above that structure's immediate uppermost limit. Airspace authorization is a separate question.

3. The minimum distance a small unmanned aircraft must keep from clouds is:
- 500 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontally
- 1,000 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontally
- 500 feet below and 1,000 feet horizontally
Show the answer
A. 500 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontally
Section 107.51(d) sets cloud clearance at no less than 500 feet below and 2,000 feet horizontally from the cloud.

4. For a Part 107 flight at night, the small unmanned aircraft must have anti-collision lighting visible for at least:
- 3 statute miles
- 1 statute mile
- 5 statute miles
Show the answer
A. 3 statute miles
Section 107.29 requires anti-collision lighting visible for at least 3 statute miles with a flash rate sufficient to avoid a collision, both at night and during civil twilight.
5. To keep exercising the privileges of a remote pilot certificate, the holder must, within the previous 24 calendar months:
- Have passed the knowledge test or completed recurrent training
- Have logged at least 3 flights in the preceding 90 days
- Have renewed the certificate and passed a flight review
Show the answer
A. Have passed the knowledge test or completed recurrent training
Section 107.65 requires recency: the initial knowledge test, the Part 61 training course, or recurrent training within the previous 24 calendar months. The certificate itself does not expire.
